People in need of donated items must pick up from an NC VOAD approved distribution site, not from a drop off site, in order to not inundate western NC with products they may not need, taking the place of items they do need. Donations at drop off sites must be authorized and recorded by NC VOAD before being relocated to approved distribution sites (see below for a list).
September 30, 2024. At this time, individuals are highly encouraged not to travel to western NC to attempt their own volunteer services or to drop off donations. Most roads and highways to western NC are closed and the infrastructure is very dangerous. It is best to collect donation items at an approved donation drop off site in one’s town or county. For a list of those drop off sites and donation item needs, please review the following sources containing these details:
The best way to help our neighbors in need is to donate funds. This is the fastest way to get supplies, resources, and man power to the folks who are stranded and without supplies in western NC. Please consider donating to the UW Helps NC Recovery Fund and the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund.
If the following options are not close to you, contact your local emergency management office to learn about distribution points in your community. Or donations can be made by contacting an NC VOAD partner agency.

Donations will be accepted at the front lobby of the Lexington Police Department station on Main Street for the foreseeable future.

BAD DADDY’S BURGER BAR Bad Daddy’s is hosting a supply drive at all its North Carolina locations. Customers are encouraged to drop off any of the following necessities at their nearest location now through Friday, Oct. 11: Non-perishable Food Hygiene Products Baby Formula/Diapers Food/Pet Supplies Blankets/Bedding Powdered Hydration Packets All donations will be transported and delivered across western North Carolina. BULL CITY BURGER AND BREWERY AND BULL CITY SOLERA AND TAPROOM Location: 107 E Parrish St, Durham, NC 27701 Location: 4120 University Dr, Durham, NC 27707 Bull City Burger and Brewery and its sister restaurant, Bull City Solera and Taproom, have set up donation bins to utilize beer trucks to deliver products for storm victims in Western North Carolina. You can drop off bottled water, personal wipes, canned foods, baby formula, feminine products, first aid items, diapers and more at both locations.
CAROLINA JUNIOR HURRICANES Location: Invisalign Arena, 111-100 Competition Ctr Dr, Morrisville, NC 27560 The Carolina Junior Hurricanes have set up donation bins at Invisalign Arena for items to be collected through Oct. 4. Non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, plastic tarps, toiletries, baby formula and more will be accepted.
CATERING WORKS Location: 2319 Laurelbrook St, Raleigh, NC 27604 Catering Works, Bloom Works and Ella’s Popcorn are accepting donations through Oct. 5 to be delivered to Operation Airdrop. Non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies, toiletries, pet food and other essential items can be dropped off at the catering company anytime from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
DINGO DOG BREWING COMPANY Location: 410 N Greensboro St # 150, Carrboro, NC 27510 Dingo Dog Brewing Company is collecting donations to give to animal rescue groups in the mountain areas recovering from the storm. The nonprofit craft brewery and cidery is accepting pet food, litter, clean water, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, soap and unopened veterinary supplies.
MANNA is distributing food and water in Western NC. Triangle locations are in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham (Southpoint), downtown Durham, Morrisville, Cary, Raleigh (Village District), Raleigh (Brier Creek), Raleigh (North Raleigh) and Holly Springs. In addition to the sales donation on Oct. 5, participating Rise stores will have a donation option for online and in-store kiosk orders through the month of October.
SOUTHERN SUGAR BAKERY Location: 4517 Lead Mine Rd Suite B, Raleigh, NC 27612 Southern Sugar Bakery is offering special “Our Hearts Are With Western NC” cookies with all proceeds going towards relief efforts with Samaritan’s Purse. The sweet treats are available for purchase online with shipment or pick-up from the Raleigh bakery.
TRIANGLE YOUNG PROFESSIONAL CIVITAN Location: Multiple Triangle Young Professional Civitan has set up donation bins at various businesses around the Triangle area to be transported to Operation AirDrop. Essential items can be dropped off at the following locations:

UNION SPECIAL Location: 2409 Crabtree Blvd #102, Raleigh, NC 27604 This week, Union Special is donating a portion of all sales to World Central Kitchen’s efforts in Western NC to help those impacted by Helene. In addition to contributing a percentage of sales, the bakery is also giving all funds from its pay-it-forward loaves to World Central Kitchen.
WEGMANS Wegmans grocery stores in North Carolina will hold a “checkout scan campaign” to aid a Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief food bank fund. Wegmans has four stores in the state: in Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest and Chapel Hill. Customers can donate $1, $3, $5 or any other amount at checkout with 100% of the money dedicated to Feeding the Carolinas, which has launched a shared fund dedicated to disaster relief efforts in 25 affected counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. A statement from the NY-based grocer said, “Wegmans will continue to work with its food bank partners to evaluate how to best support those impacted by Hurricane Helene.”

GUILFORD COUNTY
The Pleasant Garden Fire Department said it is grateful for the donations that have been already been dropped off. Crews said they are continuing to accept bottled water, Gatorade, wipes, snacks and more until further notice.

The Julian Fire Department will be one of the drop-off locations.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Through Oct. 13, deputies said they will accept bottled water, flashlights, batteries and nonperishable food items at any time in the lobby area of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, located at 130 Justice Center Drive, Reidsville, North Carolina. From there, Floyd Missionary Baptist Church will take the donated items to the western part of North Carolina.

North Carolina homeowners and renters in 25 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who had uninsured damage or losses caused by Tropical Storm Helene may be eligible for FEMA disaster assistance. FEMA may be able to help with serious needs, displacement, temporary lodging, basic home repair costs, personal property loss or other disaster-caused needs.
There are several ways to apply: Online use the FEMA App. You can also call their toll-free line: 800-621-3362 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET daily. The telephone line is open every day and help is available in most languages.
NC Disaster Relief Fund
The money will support both immediate and long-term recovery efforts in communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. The fund is managed by United Way of North Carolina. The Duke Energy Foundation has already made a generous donation of $100,000.

United Way of North Carolina
United Way of North Carolina has launched a UW Helps NC Fund. The fund will support immediate and long-term recovery efforts in communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. Contributions to the UW Helps NC Fund can be made easily online. Donors can designate their contributions to a specific United Way or allow UWNC to allocate funds to the areas of greatest need.
Free Cleanup Assistance
You can also help those affected by letting homeowners and property owners know about free storm cleanup.
Crisis Cleanup has issued a number for folks to call for assistance with debris cleanup from Hurricane Helene: (844) 965-1386. All services are free, but they are not guaranteed. The hotline will remain open through Friday, October 11.
