What is the NC Homeowner Assistance Fund (NCHAF)?
NCHAF was established through the 2021 American Rescue Plan to prevent mortgage delinquencies, defaults, displacements, and foreclosures for qualified NC homeowners experiencing financial difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic.
How does NCHAF help homeowners?
NCHAF offers the following for qualified homeowners:
- Mortgage payment assistance
- Assistance for mortgage reinstatement to catch up on late payments (first or second mortgages), or other housing-related costs due to a period of forbearance, delinquency or default
- Assistance covering other housing-related costs such as homeowner’s insurance, flood insurance, mortgage insurance, homeowner’s association dues/fees or delinquent property taxes to prevent foreclosure.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible if:
- You own a primary residence in North Carolina
- You have experienced a pandemic-related financial hardship
- You need financial assistance with a housing expense related to your primary residence
- Your income falls below $79,900 (note: if it is higher, you may still qualify under certain circumstances)
How much assistance could I receive through NCHAF?
Assistance is available up to $40,000 per eligible household, as long as funding is available. Payments will be made directly to the mortgage servicer or other eligible third party.
How can I apply?
Homeowners seeking assistance are encouraged to apply online or by phone by calling 855-MY-NCHAF, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST. There is no cost to apply for NCHAF.
