What is homeowner counseling?

Housing counselors offer guidance on homebuying, renting, reverse mortgages and default and foreclosure prevention. Use of homeowner counseling may be required for HUD programs that provide mortgage assistance.

How does it help homeowners or potential homeowners?

Housing counselors can help with a variety of situations, including:

  • Improving your credit
  • Decreasing your debt
  • Protecting your identity and your credit
  • Preparing to buy a home
  • Understanding mortgage documents
  • Going through the home buying process
  • Avoiding foreclosure
  • And more!

Does it cost money?

HUD approved counselors do not charge a fee for counseling services. You may be charged a small fee for extra services, like credit checks or educational programs.
